Edmund R. Hill

Edmund Reed Hill, 69, husband of Lucy Austin Hill, passed away March 1, peacefully with friends and family by his side. Mr. Hill was born in Augusta, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel Edmunds Hill and Howard Harper Hill, Sr. Mr. Hill constantly cherished the memory of his family who left before him, Brothers Howard Harper Hill, Jr. and Lawrence Lee Hill who died in separate accidents in 1968 and 1969, Grandmother, Ila Bludworth Edmunds, Grandfather Claude Lee Edmunds and Great Uncle Dr. John Ollie Edmunds, Sr. His friends of blessed memory are Maurice J. (Kick) Kicklighter and Charles W. Persall, for whom his youngest son is named.

Mr. Hill was a graduate of the Richmond Academy and Georgia Southern University. He has been a resident of Savannah for over 45 years, owning several businesses and serving in civic capacities. Mr. Hill served as the president of the Savannah Jaycees and President of the Clown Unit of Alee Temple Shrine. He was a member of the Sons of the Revolution and a Freemason. Mr. Hill served on the Board of Directors of the Boy Scouts of America, Coastal Empire Council, and as President of the Board of Ocean Villas. He devoted countless hours to saving the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin through the Dolphin Project and was a Life Member of the Coastal Conservation Association.

Mr. Hill was an avid boater and fisherman, and was incredibly knowledgeable of the coastal Georgia waterways and Barrier Islands. He loved his home and it’s history on the Moon River. In the past decade, Mr. and Mrs. Hill frequented their home in Florida, where they had a close circle friends whom they value dearly. He loved fishing Mosquito Lagoon, spending time on the beach, and visiting with his grandson. Mr. Hill collected antique vehicles as well as motorcycles, and rode thousands of miles with good friends. He loved to golf with his friends and son, and valued the years he spent at the Augusta National during the Masters.

Mr. Hill co-founded Austin Hill Realty with his wife, where he was Broker and a real estate developer. His knowledge, experience and dedication are at the heart of the business today. Mr. Hill was a member of Historic Trinity Methodist Church on Telfair Square.

He is survived by his wife, Lucy Austin Hill, of Savannah, his three children, Edmund Austin of Savannah, Charles Harper (Robin) of DeLand, Florida and Helen Nielle of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, his grandson, Paul Reed of DeLand, Florida, his cousins Jane Edmunds (Wayne) Novak of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and Dr. John Ollie (Karen) Edmunds, Jr. of New Orleans, Louisiana,

The Hill family wishes to express their deep and sincere gratitude for all the wonderful friends and family who came to call during this time of need.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Mr. William P. McCuen, Dr. James W. Dewberry, Dr. Ernest P. Fowler, Mr. J Brooks Gaudry, III, Mr. John B. Adams, Alee Temple Shriners, Forest City Gun Club and The Savannah Jaycees.

Services will be held 4pm Wednesday, March 4th at Trinity Methodist Church, 225 W. President Street, Savannah. Family and close friends will be received at the family home on Burnside Island following the service.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Alee Temple Shrine, Morris Slotin Fund, Trinity Methodist Church, The Rotary Club of DeLand or the charity of your choice.
